Probiotics have picked up quite a bit of fame in recent years, particularly due to the science + research that's consistently showing the connection between gut health + overall wellbeing. However, could the brightly shining spotlight blind the importance of other key players, like prebiotics? And what are these gut health helpers, anyway?

Probiotics are "good" bacteria that live in your gut (especially in the part of the digestive tract that includes the intestines) and support the absorption of nutrients, keep "bad" bacteria, yeasts and fungi at bay, and help digestive functions move smoothly. By keeping the gut healthy, probiotics also create a solid environment for the immune system to thrive, as an estimated 70% of immunity stems from the gut; and they help to balance mood by producing a large amount of the body's pleasure and happiness neurotransmitters. Collectively, probiotics live in an environment called a microbiome - a community of bacteria.

It's the dog days of summer, and there's no better way to spend these warmer months than with your pooch by your side! Even better than the love and playfulness they bring to your life is the fact that they may actually boost your health (as if we needed more reasons to love dogs...)!


As you've probably gathered by now, I'm super passionate about the gut. About 70% of the immune system stems from the gut, which makes it a major factor in developing disease if it falls out of balance. The gut also can affect our mood, produce hormones, assimilate nutrients and more.

Because we live in a world that's becoming more and more sterile from overuse of hand sanitizers, antibacterial soaps, antibiotics, reduced time outdoors and overly cleansed environments, our body's "good" bacteria is becoming less attuned to putting up a strong defense when it is being attacked by invaders, such as when we catch a cold from a friend or food poisoning when we're out to eat. Gut health is one of my favorite subjects. Not only do I find the crazy and complex world of the bacterium that reside in our intestinal tract super mind-blowing, but as someone who has dealt with a totally imbalanced gut in the past, I feel like this microbiotic world holds some of the answers of my past ailments, including SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), inflammation, and - you guessed it - mood! 

Though it may not seem like an intuitive connection, there's a lot going on in the gut's microbiome (meaning the colony of bacteria that reside in the gut) that affect how we feel. I can really nerd out on this subject, but we're going to try to keep it simple and really just skim the surface so you can get a basic understanding for yourself how the foods you eat can affect the health of your microbiome and, in turn, your mood!

Spring has officially arrived and is in full bloom! Allergies aside, there's no better time to be in nature than during the Springtime season. Gorgeous, colorful flowers are in bloom; April showers bring bright green vibrance to the trees and grass; and the weather is finally warm enough to allow us to shed the big puffy jackets we've lugged around all winter. 

Even better yet? Last night, April 26th, was the New Moon in Taurus, which is a time of slowing down, reveling in your senses and finding pleasure in the little things around us. Makes sense, doesn't it, that this time of year - the awakening of nature's beauty, of the slow and steady growth of new life - would be so aligned with Taurus' feel good, sensual energy? 

For me, this doesn't just mean taking a break from work or life to sit still for a moment. Rather it teaches me to embrace the presence, be more in the moment and revel in what is here and now - something I, admittedly, have difficulty doing. Luckily...
