As temps start to drop in autumn, and before southern crops start bloomin' (hellooo citrus), we're limited to the fruit available in the US during this in-between season. However, apples - just about every varietal - are available and ready to mingle! So, now is the time to take full advantage of cooking with, snacking on + overall loving this adored, everyday fruit.  

Luckily for you (+ me!) I've got two delicious breakfasts for you to try that incorporate apples as the star of the show, including cookies for breakfast!Read on to get your apple a day...

SPICED APPLE OVERNIGHT OATS

Makes 2 servings.

  • 1 apple, chopped + core removed

  • 2/3 cup oats

  • 1 cup milk of choice (almond or cashew are my favorites)

  • 1 tbsp cinnamon

  • ½ tbsp nutmeg

  • pinch of clove

  • 2 tbsp chia seeds

I think its wonderful to dedicate a day to celebrating L-O-V-E. Its a fun excuse to buy some flowers, eat a little chocolate and share sweet words with your partner, gal pals or yourself! But, to be completely honest, I just don't think its enough. 

No, I'm not advocating for stuffed teddy bears and red + pink balloons at the store each week, but shouldn't we take more than 24 hours to showering our loved ones, ourselves and even strangers with a little extra TLC? 

Self-love in particular could use a bump up in the priority list, don't you think? Its all too often that the busiest people I meet take care of themselves the least, leading to an empty tank and a teeter-totter on the edge of serious burnout. There's a common misconception that to go far we must push ourselves far, push hard and, yes, "sleep when we're dead". Stopping to take care of yourself along the way? Weak, selfish, undeserving. But I say thats nonsense. 

Self care is not selfish.

The weather yesterday was grim - a chance of rain quickly turned into a cold sprinkle, progressing into larger drops. It took every ounce of energy to ignore the desire to spend the entire day in pajamas instead. But we had spent the entire Saturday lounging, so were determined to brave the rain and lure ourselves out of the house with a sweet little date morning. So, we treated ourselves to a light breakfast out, some coffee (+ juice for me) and a trip to the Dupont Farmers Market. If you live in DC, or have visited the Dupont market, you know its a huge space with many vendors - a lot of which offer really beautiful produce, responsibly raised meats and even some super delicious ready-made goods.

After some strolling, dodging raindrops and other market goers, we came to a stand with gluten-free baked goodies (though I didn't catch their name). Since I've been eating GF for about 4 years now, any chance to have a fresh baked good that's me-friendly is a chance to celebrate -...
